Mobtown Laboratories
Microshows

Distilling all the kinetic energy and sonic kaboom of a large venue show into a teeny pint-sized house concert package, behold, the Mobtown Microshow.

Wendel Patrick Microshow

Wendel Patrick is rapidly making a name for himself as a producer to be recognized. Patrick fuses together different elements of jazz, electronica and Hip Hop to create lush musical collages that are entirely and undoubtedly his own. Wendel Patrick’s cd Sound: began as a cathartic project, late nights spent flushing out sounds and intricate rhythmic patterns that had built up in his mind over the course of the day, a day usually spent at the piano improvising or rehearsing for jazz and classical performances. As the late night recording sessions started to yield more and more interesting results, Wendel Patrick began sharing the tracks with other musician friends, who would repeatedly ask, “What are you going to do with these?”

Wendel Patrick joins us in the studio for a Microshow (November 13, 2014).

The late night sessions continued after college in music school, and continue to this day. By day, Kevin teaches music lecture courses at a university in Baltimore, by night, Wendel Patrick can be found frequenting local Hip Hop spots in Baltimore and D.C. and collaborating with and producing for local emcees. He has toured with Ursula Rucker throughout Europe on several occasions and produced music for commercials for Nike and Teva. “I consider myself to be extremely versatile. All of the music, the instruments…everything you hear on Sound: and Forthcoming is played by me. The albums are 99.9 % sample-free. I’ve played Mozart with orchestras, free improv shows with trios, solo improv shows, I’ve collaborated with some amazing hip hop artists, jazz artists, classical artists…and I think this versatility comes out on my albums. At the end of the day, it’s all music.”

Kevin Gift is really the mastermind behind the alter ego Wendel Patrick. Wendel Patrick is the name of his brother who sadly died at an early age but is also living on with the music Kevin creates. He came in to Mobtown poised and relaxed to give it his best. He’s understated and confident without being cocky. I feel like Frank Zappa, Kevin’s music will be understood to many more people in 50 years. It’s a context that must be digested over time.

Enjoy the show!
