Us and Us Only’s “Bored Crusader”, out on October 21st via Topshelf Records, was recorded in a blisteringly fast single-day session. The three song EP has a run time under 9 minutes, but leaves a trail of pop hooks and experimental production that hints at what the band has in store for the future. Each song rises and falls with every passing phrase, giving equal time to rhythmically complex ideas as well as straight ahead rock riffs.
Kinsey Matthews’ raw vocals shine when complemented by the smoother sheen of album contributor Lindsey Mills (Surfer Blood). The back and forth of their styles gave producer/engineer Sean Mercer more room to play and experiment with the larger choruses that pop up in each of the tracks. The production here flirts with lofi, but retains the punch and heft of the fidelity offered by a well stocked studio. With a full length coming in the spring, this offering serves as a quick teaser of what to expect next.
