Initially Surf Harp begun as the solo project of Philip Bolton in 2012. Since then, members have expanded to include Jeff Koplovitz, Chris Sweeney, Aaron Perseghin, and Dennis Mizzoni. Their debut full-length PEEL, released on Friends Records, is an exploration into the psychedelic alt-rock of the 90’s. Fuzzy, arty, and deeply layered.
I first met Phil a few years ago at a microshow. He was a super swell dude and I vividly recall him being intensely precise in his mannerisms and in the music he talked about creating. When we first started talking I quickly found out Chris and Jeff were the drummer and bassist respectively of a noise-pop band I recorded many years prior called Sea Patterns. Smaltimore strikes again.
That said, Phil and I worked closely on the mixes after he meticulously tracked (and re-tracked) everything himself in his band’s practice space in Hampden. Take a close listen to the vocals. There is a sense of density and detail in there I’ve never seen with a vocalist who self-records. It’s insanely layered and full – both melodically and harmonically. Phil has a wonderful sense of wanting to learn more and yearns for moving forward, both as a person and with his band.
Their record, PEEL is out today. Please pick it up. It would make my day. And theirs too.
