Romantic States is a duo out of Baltimore. Jim Triplett plays the guitar, Ilenia Madelaire plays drums, and they both sing. Both members are self-taught musicians, and approach songwriting through experimentation and a paring down of all musical elements. Influences range from Flipper to Young Marble Giants, Pixies to Suicide.
We were stoked to hear them perform their microshow last month. The last time we saw them perform was at Windjammer with Future Islands, Beach House and Dan Deacon. So it was a nice contrast to see them in a much smaller and more intimate space. It was also a nice treat to get a Wildhoney cover as well as a cover by the Peruvian garage rock band Los Saicos.
Their first show was performing at the final Whartscape festival in 2010. Since then they’ve performed at many other local Baltimore music events such as Soft Fest, Fields Festival, Ratscape & ScapeScape. They have also toured the Northeastern and Midwestern United States, sometimes alone and at other times with bands, such as Beach House, Peals, and Smoke Bellow.
The band has recently released the 7″ Take My Hand and Run on Nebraskan Coast and a cassette tape on DZ Tapes. Previous releases include two cassette tapes, and an EP on the French label BEKO-DSL. Currently they are working on new ideas for the next album.
