One thing I love about the Baltimore music scene is the cross-pollination that happens between bands. A bassist in one band also sings in another band. A drummer here plays trombone there. For some reason that versatility is what sparked my interest in Dungeon Kids when I heard they had recently added Kinsey Matthews of Us & Us Only to their roster. In Us & Us Only he plays guitar, sings and is the primary songwriter. In Dungeon Kids, he plays more of a backseat role and sticks to the guitar yet he is no small addition to the band. Adding Kinsey provided a new depth to the group and it’s warmly welcomed.
I had heard they were on tour with Mobtown alum Sun Club in Canada and had seen Dan Windsor et al. in and out of the studio over the past year while Sean was producing their records. He struck me as a genuine dude who looked you in the eye when he spoke to you and had a great vibe. And there was something about his band that I dug too. Even with what little I had personally heard there was something I couldn’t quite put my finger on that I liked. When I finally digested their record, it turned out to be their incredible pop sensibility and refusal to conform to a scene. I love Dan’s ingenuous lyrical narratives, Zac’s timing and snare sound, and Ben’s Rickenbacker bass and sense of melody.
You’ll hear that here in their microshow recorded here in December. Enjoy it. Download it. Share it. Have a great Monday!
