Aphids is a combination of students majoring in computer and mechanical engineering, classical music, math, and history, and they are quite possibly the coolest guys on campus. The diversity is reflected in their unique and dynamic sound. Within one song, Aphids might shift between aggressive pop, dark introspection, angular math, and relaxed grooves.
Primary songwriters John Stackpole and Trevor Nierendorf often explore drastically different styles, and it is their polarity that has established the band’s adventurous spirit. Beneath their songs’ framework, drummer/percussionist Robby Bowen tries to balance chaos with simplicity, while multi-instrumentalist Thomas Lardner and guitarist Nick Calvitt incorporate assorted timbres and dense harmonies to make the songs as full as possible. Over the last two years and despite busy schedules, Aphids have played many live shows and self-recorded two EPs and a full-length album “Quarters & Wax.” Their newest release “dogswim” is their first to be recorded in a studio above ground and was engineered by Sean and mixed by Mat. As a result, this set of songs is their most cohesive, powerful, and sensitive release to date.
