How Long Will It Take?

This is the golden question! Of course it all depends on many variables including: # of songs, arrangement, overdubs and how well rehearsed you are. Below are the typical types of sessions for band and hip hop production. Don’t worry, you might not fit in to one of these categories as there are always exceptions to the rules. And we’ll work with you to get the best possible sound within your budget.

How long will it take to record my band project?

Demos/Live Recording

Typically an artist or band will record their material live with little or no overdubs. I usually call these “live studio recordings”. Mixing is usually minimal only to achieve a basic rough mix. Many people use these recordings to simply document their works. These projects on average take 1-2 days.

High Quality Demos/EPs

This takes the approach above but uses more time in setup (to achieve a more accurate tone) and more time in the actual recording/mixing process. Scratch tracks are often overdubbed. Mixing is done with more attention to detail. This way the project sounds more accurate on all playback systems, be it your car stereo, your boombox, or your living room stereo. Many people use these recordings as a demo to book shows or to sell locally. These projects on average can take anywhere from 2 to 6 days.

Professional Album Production

Again, this takes the approach of a high quality demo but major attention is given to overdubs and mixing. Usually the only orginal live instruments used are the drums. The rest of the instruments are overdubbed. Mixing is done with automation, dynamics, effects, etc. Editing is done to clean tracks or repair performances. Several versions of the mix are made until the artists are happy with the final results. Many people use these recordings to sell locally or nationally. These projects can range from a week to several weeks.

How long will it take to record my hip hop project?

Mixtape

Typically a rapper or MC will come with their beats to track vocals with minimal overdubs or production. A song can be recorded in 2-3 hours depending on how well rehearsed they are.

Professional Album Production

As with a mixtape, the rapper or MC will come with their beats to track vocals and will typically add overdubs and improv tracks. Much more time is spent in mixing and tracking the vocals. A pre-master is typically made, as well as stage mixes, instrumentals and cappella mixes. A song can be recorded in 4-6 hours depending on how well rehearsed they are and how much production is needed.
